Excited school children Recently, some countries in Sub-Saharan region of Africa (Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda) experienced incidents of conflicts which have led to loss of lives, workforce, learning time and disruption of education services. This has negatively impacted on access and quality of education across many regions and at all levels of education and training.

The peace education programme is the first of its kind in Kenya and in some countries in the region. It is intended to help learners acquire relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to foster behaviour change that will enhance peaceful co-existence. Peace education will empower learners with problem solving skills, ability to address conflicts peacefully, and thus promote tolerance for diversity, cultural differences and human dignity.

The peace education main focus is to impact knowledge, skill, attitudes and values that promote peaceful and harmonious living. This programme has been initiated to help communities internalize relevant aspects of positive behaviour change. This will in turn lead to the development of society whose members are agents of promoting sustainable peace.

People who have internalized skills and values of peace Education acquire an extraordinary drive to safeguard the sanctity of human life, promote harmonious coexistence and protect the environment. This has been evident through "heroic deeds" performed by particular individuals in instances of violence both in the recent times and throughout human history. Young minds, at the formative stage, need to be effectively equipped with values and attitudes that promote interdependence and respect of the sanctity for human life and appreciation of the environment.

The implementation of this programme will enable individuals' re-evaluate their behavious, develop commitment and endeavour to promote national healing and peaceful coexistence. It will also lay a firm foundation for future peace work by citizens who choose to be peace makers.
